🔧 Machine selection
Avyac machines are carbide drill bit sharpeners. The NC18 and NC540 have been designed with sufficient rigidity to sharpen carbide drill bits and achieve an optimal surface finish. The NC18 is ideal for drills with diameters ranging from 1 to 14.5 mm. The NC540 handles larger diameters (5 to 40 mm) and lengths up to 2000 mm. They can also grind other types of materials, depending on the grinding wheel mounted on the machine.
Avyac machines support both HSS and carbide drill bits. The NC18 allows for various sharpening operations on HSS up to Ø 14.5 mm, while the NC540 handles larger and longer HSS bits.
A CNC (computer numerical control) sharpening machine such as the NC18 or NC540 automates production and features an intuitive touchscreen interface, preconfigured programs, and an automatic loader. A manual grinding machine requires longer adjustments and operations by an operator. Avyac focuses primarily on modern CNC solutions, but we sometimes offer retrofitted used machines in our workshops.
⚙️ Capacity and performance
NC18: Ø 1 to 8 mm standard (0.039″-0.315″) and 2 to 14.5 mm optional (0.089″-0.551″) for HSS and carbide drill bits.
NC540: Ø 5 to 40 mm (0.196″-1.574″), up to 2,000 mm length (78.74″).
Yes, the NC18 and NC540 can sharpen different profiles, ranging from standard helical, faceted, or conical reliefs to more complex drill bits such as step drill bits, gundrills, end mill, taps, reamers, punches, and other complex shapes. We also respond to specific requests and develop non-catalog programs.
The duration of a sharpening cycle on an Avyac machine such as the NC18 varies depending on the type of program. It will generally be between 1 and 2 minutes per drill bit in automatic production for standard drill bits. The machine can be configured to find the best compromise between speed and sharpening quality.
AVYAC machines do not have an automatic grinding wheel loader, but they can load a grinding wheel holder with several wheels on. So they can perform various operations, such as roughing/finishing or, in some cases, sharpening specific profiles or shapes.
🧠 Technology & CNC
The operator inserts the drill bits into the automatic feeder and then selects the corresponding program. The machine then loads, sharpens, unloads the tool, and automatically retrieves the next drill bit.
A CNC machine is controlled by a processor dedicated to axis movements and a PLC that manages safety and the various actuators on the machine. Controlling the axes and grinding wheels allows for precise and repeatable tool sharpening. Furthermore, thanks to the management of interpolated axes, numerous shapes and sharpening profiles are possible! Our machines are equipped with the latest Siemens Sinumerik technologies (840D, ONE).
Avyac machines like the NC18 and NC540 feature an intuitive touchscreen interface and pre-configured programs. A short 3-day training course is all it takes for an operator to become fully operational.
Yes, the NC18 and NC540 CNC grinding centers operate fully automatically with circular feeders (~90 tools or more), pre-configured programs and an intuitive interface, which greatly reduces human intervention.
🏭 Integration into the workshop
To install an Avyac sharpener, you will need a space adapted to its dimensions:
NC18: approximately 1.4 m × 1.2 m × 1.5 m of floor space, with free space to the right and behind for doors and maintenance.
NC540: approximately 2.2 m × 1.6 m × 2.6 m of floor space for the version up to 1 m in length.
To operate correctly, the machine requires a dry compressed air supply of 5 bar. The required power supply is 400 V three-phase with neutral and ground. A transformer can be integrated into the machine to adapt to the specific electrical networks of each country.
Yes, we have customers who use their machines on dedicated production lines, particularly in the automotive industry for deep hole drilling with gundrills.
Yes, the machine is designed for continuous operation; moreover, thanks to the possibility of safely opening the door halfway, it is possible to retrieve the sharpened drill bits without ever interrupting the current cycle. This ensures optimal machine availability.
🌍 Avyac & the brand
The machines have been designed, manufactured, and marketed by Avyac Machines, based in Veauche (Loire, France), for over 60 years.
Our machines benefit a wide range of users: from professional sharpeners seeking precision and productivity, to integrated workshops that use drill bits on a daily basis, as well as manufacturers of new tools who want to guarantee optimal quality right from the production stage.
Avyac works with international agents to ensure the sale and support of its machines in many countries.

Choosing Avyac means choosing a compact, autonomous machine equipped with an unrivalled automatic gravity system. The unique kinematics of our machines ensure speed, stability, and ideal repeatability for sharpening tools.
We have chosen to offer robust, easy-to-use machines at the fairest price for a 5-axis machine. Our family-run business on a human scale ensures that you will have the same dedicated contact person throughout the years.
💰 Cost & profitability
Prices vary depending on the model and options. You can request a personalized quote from us or from one of our agents to obtain a precise offer. As a guide for France, a 5-axis NC18 grinding machine without options starts at €100,000.
It all depends on the number of drill bits/end mills that the machine will have to sharpen each day, but the higher the number, the faster the machine will pay for itself. We can help you determine the return on investment for your future machine, based on factors such as average cycle times, tooling costs, machine availability, etc.
Re-sharpening your tools is almost always more cost-effective than buying new ones. It extends their lifespan, allowing them to be used dozens of times, while ensuring performance and precision with every cycle. This is both environmentally friendly and economically advantageous!
As with any grinding machine, preventive maintenance and monitoring of wear parts such as the clamping system, grinding wheels, oil, oil filters, belts, and couplings must be carried out regularly. The cost per grinding operation remains minimal (a few cents per tool).
🛠️ Maintenance & After-Sales Service
Avyac offers comprehensive services: after-sales service, spare parts, repairs, hotline, etc. Regular maintenance of grinding wheels, lubrication, and cleaning improves the service life of the machine. We train our customers in the routine maintenance of their sharpening machines.
Yes, when the machine is delivered, Avyac teams are present at the customer’s site to train the relevant engineers, operators, and maintenance teams. Installation and training on our machines generally takes between 3 and 4 days.
Yes, we provide after-sales service for our machines in Europe and also in the rest of the world. Throughout the machine’s lifetime, we support our customers with maintenance, retrofitting, and the installation of new programs.
